Access & Inductions

Q: How do I book rehearsal spaces or technical equipment?
You must complete the Performing Arts & Music Induction on MyBeckett first:

This includes:

  • Reading the MPA Agreement

  • Attending an in-person induction with a Learning Support Specialist in the space you'll be using
    Once completed, you’ll be able to request bookings via the system linked on the Bookings page.
     

Q: When can I use the spaces (e.g. studio, Black Box, Music rooms)?
Most spaces are available to book Monday–Friday, term time 08:30-21:00 and holiday time 08:30-18:00. Requests outside these hours are subject to approval and availability.
 

Q: Do I need supervision to use technical equipment?
You may use the AV trollies available in all spaces to playback music and videos. You may NOT under any circumstances use the lighting consoles without special permission from the learning specialists. 
 

Q: Can I bring in my own equipment?
You can, but it must be approved in advance. You'll need to provide:

  • A risk assessment

  • A method statement

  • Evidence of PAT testing (if electrical)
     

Technical & Facilities

Q: I want to learn more about lights/sound/AV – where do I start?
Start with our Resources page for tutorials on:

  • ETC lighting desks (Eos family)

  • QLab

  • Sound and music sourcing

We also recommend shadowing please ask a Learning Support Specialist for a skills session.
Please note that you may not use the sound, lighting and video consoles in the spaces without special permission from a Learning Support Specialist. 
 

Q: Who do I talk to about technical requests or support?

Q: Are there any rules about what I can do in the space?
Yes – to ensure safety and fairness:

  • Spaces MUST be booked out before use for health & safety and security purposes.

  • No food/drink in tech areas

  • Risk assessments for complex work

  • Leave the space as you found it

  • Respect other users' bookings
     

Q: Can I use the Black Box or other spaces for non-course projects?
Potentially, yes – we love to support student-led work. Talk to a Learning Support Specialist in advance and we’ll help you navigate what's possible and any requirements (insurance, access, etc.).

Q: Can I film or photograph in the spaces?
Yes, but please:

  • Inform staff in advance

  • Ensure performers/crew have given consent

  • Credit the university in public sharing if required by your module or event
     

Q: Is there any storage space for my show/rehearsal kit?
Short-term storage may be possible via booking out a locker via MPA Bookings. Please label, tidy items only. Unclaimed items may be removed after a certain period.
 

Q: What happens if something breaks or isn’t working?
Let us know immediately via email or our mobile! Don’t try to fix it yourself. The sooner a breakage is reported the sooner we can fix it and get its back to working order.
